Beyond The Chops- Jojo Mayer’s teaching philosophy

I started playing drums when I was four years old. My father is a drummer, so it was only natural that I would follow in his footsteps. When I was eleven, my father passed away and I stopped playing drums for a while. It wasn’t until I was sixteen that I picked up the sticks again and decided to pursue drumming as a career.

I studied jazz at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and then moved to New York City to pursue my dream of becoming a professional musician. I quickly realized that the music scene in NYC was very different from what I was used to back home. There were no rules, no boundaries; it was truly an open playing field.

I began developing my own style of drumming, which blending elements of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and rock. This unique approach caught the attention of some well-known musicians, including keyboardist Bernie Worrell (of Parliament Funkadelic fame) and saxophonist David Sanborn.

In 1993, I formed the group Nerve with bassist John Hebert and turntablist DJ Olive. We combined live instruments with samples and loops to create a sound that was completely new and fresh. Nerve has released four albums and toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America.

My latest project is called Jojo Mayer & Nervous Cop., which is a trio with guitarist Jordan McLean and bassist Jesse Murphy (of Brazilian Girls fame). We mix elements of afrobeat, dubstep, techno, and other electronic genres with live drums/percussion to create an exhilarating live experience that will leave you wanting more!

Jojo Mayer’s gear

Jojo Mayer is a world-renowned drummer and percussionist who has played with some of the biggest names in music. He is also an accomplished producer and DJ. So, what gear does Jojo use to create his unique sound?

Jojo’s drums are custom built by DW (Drum Workshop). He uses a combination of maple and birch shells, which gives his drums a warm, full tone. His cymbals are also custom made, by Sabian. He uses a mixture of different metals to get the perfect sound for each piece of his kit.

As for hardware, Jojo uses a mix of DW and Gibraltar. His DW snare stand is double braced for extra strength and stability. He also uses DW hi-hat stands and Gibraltar rack tom brackets.

Mayer’s choice of drumheads is interesting, as he prefers to use clear acrylic batter heads on all of his drums except for the snare drum. On the snare drum, he uses a coated Remo Powerstroke 3 head. He says that the clear heads allow him to hear every detail of his playing, while the coated head adds just enough warmth to the sound.

As far as accessories go, Jojo uses Vater stick holders, ProMark sticks (he has his own signature model), Evans G2 clear tom skins, Remo Muff’l mute pads

and Tama speed cobra double bass pedals.
