That year he also earned Mr Basketball honors given to the best high school basketball player in Mississippi as well as Gatorade Player of the Year honors for Mississippi and Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year honors after averaging 19 points per game during his lone college season at Kentucky where he helped lead them to 38 wins which is still tied for second most ever by a freshman in NCAA Division I history behind only Carmelo Anthony’s 35 at Syracuse University during their 2002-03 national championship winning season where they defeated Texas Tech 81-78 in overtime led by future Hall of Famer Chris Beard who now coaches at Texas Tech..
